Joey entered the world on April 12, 1988, immediately filling his mother Anita with joy. His love for the EMS field started early; Joey was instantly drawn to playing with ambulances and fire engines. He became so good at imitating the sound of a siren, he once accidentally pulled someone over while riding his bike.
As a pre-teen, Joey became a "kid reporter" on KCOY-12, where he found a passion for telling stories. Through this experience, he was able to start garnering skills in public speaking and meet a diverse group of people on the Central Coast. Joey graduated high school in 2006, looking to eventually combine both passions: journalism and helping others.
Joey started as an EMT at AMR in 2007, becoming a paramedic by 2010. Joey, being the fast learner he is, aimed to quickly become one of the best in his field. He was successful in this feat, being recognized as the best paramedic in the country at a National Clinical Competition in 2015.
While working as a paramedic, dispatcher, and firefighter for CalFire, Joey still managed to complete his bachelor's degree at Cal Poly in June of 2018, becoming the first person in his family to graduate college. By August 2018, Joey also started working for CalStar, fulfilling a dream of working on the renowned helicopter ambulance on the Central Coast. In 2020, Joey completed fire academy for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, proving that with heart and dedication, anything is possible. Joey hoped to one day combine all of his schooling and field experience to become Public Information Officer of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
Joey is survived by his fiancée Melissa and dog Lucy, as well as: his grandmother Sally, mother Anita, stepfather Ken, father Ruben, brothers Cody, Kenny, Jesse, and Dominick, and sisters Reynessa and Jasmine.
